A super-fit vegan friend of mine just posted an eye-opening, 25 second video on you-tube; showing a couple of NYC men 'firing up' their grille on the city streets and serving to passers-by, what looked to be something akin to cooked, dead rats on sticks; a stark reminder that you can't get away from a meat-based culture, anywhere these days. Not when you're listening to the radio. Not when you're watching that weapon in the corner of your living room---er uh, TV. And certainly not when you're walking down any city street in these formerly great United States.
Well I haven't consumed animal 'foods,' in about 20 years, now, and seeing this short little video, just reminded me of how I've managed to stay fit and vegan; 90 plus percent raw vegan, in fact, for years; while a ton of former friends of mine have allowed themselves to become bloated, lazy, meat-a-holics. How've I done it?
By simply following my 3 'master keys' to staying vegan in a world of flesh-eaters. Oh yes. Add 15 to 30 minutes, every day, of non-stop calisthenics---like push-ups, crunches, and squats---for best results, to the following 3-key-system. Its da#n-near impossible to be healthy, without being physically fit. The keys:
Key One: As stated in the tag-line of the excellent documentary, Earthlings, 'make the connection.' That is, make the connection in your mind, each time you see a burger, a pork-rind, a stick o' jerky, or even something that looks unrecognizable---like a 'rat on a stick'---that this bit of 'food' you're looking upon, was once a living, breathing, sentient being. One that walked the earth. One that had a family. One that had other beings for which it cared, and vice-versa. I've done this for years and found it far easier to stay away from flesh-foods; as I've conditioned myself to associate the smell of meat, cooking, to that which it truly is---dead, 'sentient being,' cooking. To make this easier on yourself, watch the documentary, Earthlings; viewable free on YouTube at the time of this writing. Then follow by driving by a Burger King or Mcdonalds, while those film images are still fresh in thy mind. And 'soak up' the smell. Works every time.
Key Two: When out with friends, order salads at restaurants; add baked potato if necessary. Any decent restaurant will have the option of a good, large green salad. Tell them to add extra olives if they've got 'em. You can also, as I do, carry a plastic bag full of raw almonds wherever you go. Pour a half-handful onto the salad and you're 'good to go.' If still hungry---or if you project hunger when ordering just the salad---add a baked potato. Do this, and you'll leave your meal feeling light, energetic, yet sufficiently satisfied. There is simply no excuse for NOT maintaining a healthy, plant-based diet, when going out with friends. If they 'insist' on Burger King or McDonalds, take a stand. And wait in the car. Then make them wait while you indulge in a nice, healthy, vegan meal at one of those all-you-can-eat salad bars. Take a long time for best results. The longer you take, the more likely you are to have one of your friends 'get curious' at what you're eating in there; and wander in by default; an opportunity for a friend's conversion to the sane, cruelty-free lifestyle, right there.
Key Three: Reach for fruits, salads, and green smoothies before consuming other food types. The natural plant fibers of these foods literally scrub your digestive system clean. Why is this important? Well, as great vegan Prof. Arnold Ehret often wrote, the digestive tract is where toxic, addictive poisons, built up from years of eating flesh-based or other processed foods, 'hide.' The average man, as Ehret claimed, has literally pounds of un-eliminated, poisonous-food residue, built up and 'impacted' onto the walls of his eliminative system.
Until that 'stuff' is cleansed out, you'll likely, if you're in that situation, still have cravings. For similar 'stuff.' You can make staying vegan far easier on yourself, by consuming fruits, salads, and green smoothies before reaching for any other food types. The raw fibers of fruits and greens literally scrub the digestive tract clean of latent poisons. Follow this third key and you'll eliminate toxic food cravings, totally in time. Plus, you'll tend to eat far, far less, of whatever other items are contained in a given meal's 'main course.' And you'll make 'flesh-food' cravings a distant memory.
So there you have it. Three master keys to staying vegan in a world of flesh-eaters. 'Connect the dots,' mentally, between what you choose to ingest, and from whence it came. When out with friends, order a salad, plus baked potato, if necessary. And finally, reach for fruits, salads, and green smoothies before anything else.
Do this you shall absolutely thrive, physically-speaking. Addictions and cravings will become a thing of the past. You'll drive by fast-food restaurants, and see the lines of cars waiting for their 'meat-fix;' And, quite possibly, you'll do as I do, these days, in similar situations; laugh inwardly, and think to yourself, 'that's who I used to be.'
